Fundamentals of ABB, KUKA and FANUC industrial robots

  • Format: online training
  • Duration: 8 modules × 3 hours = 24 hours
  • Frequency: twice a week
Week 1

Module 1 — Introduction and safety basics (3h)

  • What an industrial robot is — applications and types.
  • Key concepts: degrees of freedom, payload, coordinate systems.
  • Safety in robotics: ISO standards (ISO 10218, RIA), safety zones and limiters, operators' personal responsibilities.

Module 2 — Common risks and protective systems (3h)

  • Typical risks when working with ABB, KUKA and FANUC.
  • Emergency stops, scanners and fences.
  • Deadman switch and principles of manual mode.
  • Practical safety case studies.
Week 2

Module 3 — ABB: Basics, RAPID syntax and safety (3h)

  • Getting to know the FlexPendant and IRC5 controller, jogging (moving the robot manually).
  • RAPID basics: program structure (MODULE, PROC, VAR), core commands MoveJ, MoveL, WaitDI, SetDO, TPWrite.
  • Working with Tool and WorkObject. Safety on ABB: SafeMove, zones and limits.

Module 4 — KUKA: Basics, KRL syntax and safety (3h)

  • KUKA SmartPad and KRC controller, jogging and coordinate systems.
  • KRL basics: program structure (DEF, END, PTP, LIN), core commands PTP, LIN, WAIT FOR, SIGNAL, HALT.
  • Working with bases (BASE) and tools (TOOL). Safety on KUKA: SafeOperation, limits.
Week 3

Module 5 — FANUC: Basics, TP (Teach Pendant) syntax and safety (3h)

  • iPendant and R-30i controller, jogging and coordinate control.
  • TP programming basics: TP program structure (PROGRAM, END, LABELS), J and L motion commands, WAIT, IF/SELECT, CALL.
  • Working with UFRAME and UTOOL. Safety on FANUC: Dual Check Safety (DCS).

Module 6 — Working with I/O and peripheral safety (3h)

  • Controlling grippers and sensors, working with digital inputs/outputs.
  • Safety integration: fault signals, interlocks, machine synchronization.
Week 4

Module 7 — Practical scenarios + risk analysis (3h)

  • Pick & Place programs, palletizing and working with point arrays.
  • Risk analysis: what can go wrong and how to prevent it.

Module 8 — Final project and safe programming (3h)

  • A small project: integrating a program with I/O and safe limits.
  • Comparing ABB, KUKA and FANUC in terms of safety and functionality.
  • Q&A, recommendations for future practice.

Outcome of the course

  • Participants will be able to work safely with ABB, KUKA and FANUC robots.
  • They will know the basics of programming (RAPID, KRL, TP).
  • They will know how to use the protective systems of all three platforms.

Who is the course for?

  • University and school students in technical fields who want to take their first steps in industrial robotics.
  • Technicians and operators in manufacturing plants who work, or will soon work, with industrial robots.
  • Engineers from other fields (electrical, mechanical, automation) who want to broaden their knowledge.
  • Anyone interested in modern technology who wants to gain basic skills for working with robots.

What will you learn?

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the key principles and terminology of industrial robotics.
  • Distinguish between types of industrial robots and their applications.
  • Describe the structure and main components of an industrial robot.
  • Apply basic safety rules when working with robots.
  • Work with industrial robot simulators and perform simple movements.
  • Create short robot motion programs.
  • Simulate basic production processes with a robot (picking, moving and placing parts).
