The first country in the world with 10% of its workforce made up of robots
South Korea is taking a groundbreaking step forward in automation, becoming the first country in the world to integrate robots into 10% of its workforce. This revolutionary initiative is a response to the alarming demographic challenges caused by a sharply falling birth rate.
In order to maintain its economic stability and production capacity, the country is investing billions in the development of robotics. According to the International Federation of Robotics' World Robotics 2024 report, South Korea ranks first in the world for deploying robots in industry, with an impressive density of 1,012 robots per 10,000 employees. This makes it the world leader in industrial automation.
Robotization in a global context
Compared with its competitors, South Korea has more than twice the robot density of most developed countries. Only Singapore comes close, with 770 robots per 10,000 employees. In the European Union, for example, the average density is 219 robots per 10,000 employees, with Germany, Sweden and Denmark leading the region.
A solution to demographic challenges
With an aging population and one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Korea faces serious challenges in maintaining a sustainable economy. To compensate for its shrinking workforce, the country keeps expanding the use of robots. This strategy not only eases labor shortages but also improves productivity and competitiveness on international markets.
“Robot density serves as a barometer for tracking the degree of automation adoption in the manufacturing industry around the world,” notes Takayuki Ito, President of the International Federation of Robotics.
South Korea demonstrates how technological innovation can be a powerful tool for tackling global demographic and economic problems. This trend is expected to continue, with the country cementing its position as a leader in robotization.
