Safety when working with industrial robots: Basic rules and principles

In the era of Industry 4.0, industrial robots are at the heart of modern manufacturing. They increase efficiency, improve quality and reduce routine tasks for people. But deploying these powerful machines raises a key question: How do we guarantee workplace safety? Safety rules are not an obstacle to productivity but its basic precondition.

In this article we look at the most important principles and rules that every operator, engineer and manager should know and follow.

Why is safety so important?

Safety when working with robots is directly about protecting human life and health. One careless movement or a software error can lead to serious injuries. On top of that, incidents cause financial losses, production stoppages and legal consequences for the company.

The main goal is to create a working environment in which people and robots can coexist and work in harmony.

Basic safety principles

Safety in robotics is built on a few key principles:

  1. Designing for safety: Risk should be eliminated right at the design stage of the robotic cell. This includes choosing suitable equipment and laying out the work area correctly.
  2. Technical measures: Physical and software systems are put in place to prevent access to hazardous zones and stop the robot when necessary.
  3. Administrative measures: These include training, written instructions, operating procedures and regular inspections.

Basic rules for safe work

  1. Physical safeguards
  • Safety fences and doors: The robotic cell must be fully enclosed with sturdy guard panels. All doors must have interlocking safety devices that ensure the robot stops immediately if a door is opened.
  • Presence sensors: Light curtains, 3D laser scanners or pressure mats are used. They create an invisible barrier. When a person enters the hazardous zone, the sensor sends a signal to stop the robot.
  1. Software and electrical safeguards
  • Emergency stop button (E-stop): A large red emergency stop button must be placed in a visible, easily accessible position on the robot's control panel and at other key points. It immediately cuts the robot's power and motion.
  • Safety circuits: All safety systems (doors, sensors, E-stop) are connected to safety circuits, which take priority over all other commands.
  • Programming mode (Teach Mode): When an operator has to enter the cell for programming or maintenance, the robot must run in a special mode with reduced speed and power. This lowers the risk of injury.
  1. Training and procedures
  • Mandatory training: Anyone who will work with an industrial robot must complete specialized safety training. It covers correct handling of the systems, recognizing risks and responding appropriately in an emergency.
  • Written instructions: All procedures for operation, maintenance and troubleshooting must be clearly documented and available to all staff.
  • Regular inspections: Safety systems must be checked and tested regularly to make sure they work correctly.

Safety training from Artec Robotics

At Artec Robotics we believe the human factor is key to safety. That's why we offer specialized training for everyone in direct contact with robotic systems. Our training is designed for integrators, operators and managers and focuses on:

  • Understanding the international safety standards (ISO 10218, ISO/TS 15066).
  • Practical skills for working with protective systems.
  • Procedures for safe operation and maintenance.
  • Identifying and managing potential risks.
