OmniCore EyeMotion: Robots that see and think in real time

Robotics is entering a new era. The days when machines were limited by strict, pre-programmed movements are passing. Technology giant ABB has unveiled its latest software – OmniCore EyeMotion. It was created to give robots the ability to see, understand and adapt to their surroundings in real time.

What is OmniCore EyeMotion?

It's software that integrates with ABB's OmniCore control system. It lets any robot use third-party cameras and sensors, so the machine can recognize objects and react to changes in its environment. What's more, this technology works even in the most complex applications.

Marc Segura, president of ABB Robotics, explains that until now such capabilities required complex hardware. Now EyeMotion makes 2D and 3D vision available to any robot, increasing its flexibility and autonomy.

Easier deployment and broad applicability

One of the biggest benefits of OmniCore EyeMotion is its ease of use. ABB designed it for users of all skill levels. It has a simplified web interface with a “drag and drop” function, which makes fast image recognition easy.

According to ABB, the software can cut commissioning time by up to 90%. That's a huge advantage over custom solutions. The system has applications in many sectors:

  • Logistics: parcel sorting.
  • Food and beverage: quality inspection.
  • Automotive manufacturing: assembly and inspection.
  • Packaging: precise, fast product placement.

Intelligence and the future of robotics

OmniCore EyeMotion is just one part of ABB's bigger vision. It's aiming for “autonomous versatile robotics” (AVR). The goal is for robots to be able to plan and carry out complex tasks without human intervention.

The new technology can be combined with ABB's Automatic Path Planning Online. This lets the robot calculate optimal paths, avoiding collisions with obstacles. The company says this increases cycle speed by up to 50%.

ABB is investing actively in artificial intelligence. It recently partnered with LandingAI. This investment aims to make visual AI faster and more accessible. It will let system integrators and end users retrain AI models themselves for new scenarios.

With OmniCore EyeMotion, ABB is taking an important step toward the future of intelligent automation, built on robots that don't just carry out commands but perceive, understand and adapt to the world around them.
