The connected factory: Why Industrial Ethernet matters more than ever

In today's era of automation and digitalization, industrial companies face the challenge of connecting and coordinating a huge number of devices, machines and systems. The answer to this challenge is Industrial Ethernet (Industrial Ethernet), which has become the main communication backbone for Industry 4.0 and the IoT (Internet of Things).

What is Industrial Ethernet?

At first glance, Industrial Ethernet may look like the ordinary Ethernet we use at home or in the office. At its core, however, it's much more. While standard Ethernet is designed for an office environment where conditions are relatively stable, Industrial Ethernet is specially developed to work reliably in the harsh and unpredictable conditions of industry.

The main differences lie in its robustness and determinism.

  • Robustness: Industrial Ethernet equipment is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, vibration, electromagnetic interference (EMI), moisture, dust and corrosive chemicals. The cables and connectors are tougher and have special protection.
  • Determinism: In industry, especially in machine control, timing is critical. Communication must be predictable, with a precisely defined delay (low latency), to guarantee that all processes stay synchronized. Industrial Ethernet uses specialized protocols that provide this determinism, unlike standard Ethernet, which can have variable response times.

The advantages of Industrial Ethernet

Using Industrial Ethernet brings a number of significant advantages to modern production environments:

  1. Higher speed and throughput: Unlike traditional industrial protocols (such as Fieldbus), Ethernet offers significantly higher data transfer speeds (100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and up). This allows large volumes of information to be transmitted in real time, such as sensor data, video from quality-control cameras and more.
  2. Integration and standardization: Industrial Ethernet allows seamless integration of different devices and systems, regardless of their manufacturer. It uses standard protocols (TCP/IP), which makes it easy to connect the production network to the corporate IT network. This unification reduces complexity and maintenance costs.
  3. Greater scalability: Ethernet-based networks can easily be expanded. Adding new devices or production lines is much simpler than with outdated network architectures.
  4. Improved security: By using standard network protocols and security tools familiar from the IT world (VPNs, firewalls), Industrial Ethernet makes it possible to build more secure networks that are protected against cyberattacks.

Reliability and determinism: Specialized protocols such as PROFINET, EtherCAT and EtherNet/IP guarantee that critical data is transmitted on time and reliably, which is vital for the safety and efficiency of production processes.

The main Industrial Ethernet protocols

To handle the challenges of real time, specific protocols were developed on top of basic Ethernet. Some of the most widespread are:

  • PROFINET (Process Field Network): Developed by Siemens and PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). It's widely used and offers high performance and flexibility, suitable for a range of applications – from robot control to conveyor lines.
  • EtherCAT (Ethernet for Control Automation Technology): Known for its extremely high speed and efficiency. It's ideal for applications requiring ultra-fast synchronization, such as packaging machines and CNC machines.
  • EtherNet/IP (Industrial Protocol): Uses standard Ethernet and TCP/IP, which makes it easy to integrate. It's preferred in North America and supported by many manufacturers.
  • Modbus/TCP: A version of the traditional Modbus protocol that runs over Ethernet. It's popular because of its simplicity and wide support.

The future of Industrial Ethernet

The development of Industrial Ethernet is closely linked to the future of industry. With the arrival of 5G and the growing need for wireless connectivity, Industrial Ethernet protocols are expected to adapt and offer more reliable wireless solutions.

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) requires collecting and analyzing huge volumes of data. Industrial Ethernet is the perfect foundation for this, because it provides the throughput and reliability needed to transmit data from sensors to cloud platforms or local servers.

In conclusion, Industrial Ethernet is not just a technology tool but a vital component for building the intelligent, connected and efficient factories of the future. It's the key to unlocking the full potential of Industry 4.0 and digital transformation.
